Themes
The app is tested on the Horizon and Dawn themes. Cart drawers that are not based on Dawn or Horizon may need a page refresh to show the gift. The progress block needs an Online Store 2.0 theme.
The app does not edit your theme files and does not create hidden or duplicate products.
Checkout
The gift is made free by a Shopify discount, and a checkout safety check runs at checkout. Both use Shopify Functions, Shopify's own way for apps to take part in checkout.
If Shopify cannot run the checkout safety check, for example because of an error, checkout goes ahead, so a failure of the check itself does not stop your sales. In that case an order can include a gift that is not free, or a free gift for a cart that no longer reaches the minimum after discounts. Diagnostics shows errors Shopify reports for the check. The app sets the check up this way; if you change that setting in Shopify, the app leaves your choice as it is, and Diagnostics shows it.
Orders that skip the cart
Buy it now and express checkout buttons on product pages, and cart links that go straight to checkout, skip the cart, so those orders do not get the gift. The same applies to orders placed from other channels that go straight to checkout, such as Facebook and Instagram shops.
Shopify lets apps add a product during checkout only on Shopify Plus, and this app does not do that. If a gift promotion matters more, you can turn off dynamic checkout buttons in the Buy buttons block of your product page in the theme editor while it runs.
Not supported
- Headless storefronts (such as Hydrogen).
- Point of Sale.
The app needs the Online Store sales channel.
Shipping
A gift that needs shipping can raise the shopper's shipping cost. With weight based rates its weight counts, so set the gift's weight to 0 to avoid that. Even at weight 0, Shopify can add a separate shipping rate for the gift when it is in another shipping profile than the rest of the cart or ships from another location. The gift editor asks you to confirm before saving a gift that needs shipping.
