Gift rules

Each gift has a minimum spend and one gift product. This page explains what counts toward the minimum and how gifts behave.

How a gift works

  1. When a cart reaches your minimum spend, the app embed adds 1 unit of your gift product to the cart.
  2. In the cart and at checkout, a Shopify discount the app sets up makes that unit free while the cart reaches your minimum at full prices.
  3. If the cart stops qualifying, for example a discount code takes it below your minimum when you count spend after discounts, the app removes the gift from the cart. A checkout safety check also asks the shopper to remove such a gift before paying.

The gift reaches your orders, inventory and fulfillment like any other item, at its normal price with a discount that makes it 0.

What counts toward the minimum

  • After discounts (recommended): what the shopper actually pays for the other items. A 40% off code that takes a cart from 80 to 48 means no gift at a minimum of 75.
  • Before discounts: full prices, ignoring all discounts.
  • Gift cards and the free gifts themselves never count, so one gift can never unlock another.
  • Products you exclude in a gift's settings do not count toward that gift.
  • Products that other apps add to the cart, such as shipping protection or gift wrap, count like any other product. Exclude them in the gift's settings if they should not.

Excluding products

Under Products that do not count, choose up to 50 products whose price should not count toward the minimum, for example sale items or samples.

Several gifts

You can run several gifts at once, each with its own minimum and gift product. A cart that reaches several minimums gets each gift. Up to 25 gifts can be active or scheduled at once. Long exclusion lists share one size limit, so they lower how many gifts can run; the app tells you when a save would pass a limit.

Other currencies

The minimum is set in your store currency. For shoppers paying in another currency, it is converted at Shopify's exchange rate.

In currencies without cents, such as the yen, a cart a few units below your minimum can get the gift in the cart when an order discount is shared across products you excluded; checkout then asks the shopper to remove it.

Schedule and pause

  • Start and End (optional) set when a gift runs. Days are in the time zone of the computer you use to set them.
  • On the app's home page, Pause stops one gift and Resume starts it again. Pause all gifts stops every gift at once.
  • On the storefront, start and end dates follow the shopper's device clock, so a clock that is wrong can add or remove the gift a little early or late. Whether the gift is free always follows Shopify's own schedule for the discount.

Discount codes and combining

Keep Product discounts turned on under Combine with other discounts (the default), and allow the same in your other discounts. If a discount does not combine with the gift, Shopify applies only one of them. If the other discount applies, the app removes the gift from the cart instead of leaving it at full price. If the gift applies, the shopper's discount does not. Diagnostics lists the discounts that do not combine.

What shoppers can and cannot do

  • One unit of each gift is free. If a shopper raises the gift's quantity, the app sets it back to 1; to buy more, they add the product again at its normal price.
  • If a shopper removes the gift, it is not added back in that browser tab unless the cart drops below the minimum and reaches it again. This needs a browser that lets the store keep data for the tab: where that is blocked, the gift can come back on the next page.
  • An out of stock gift is not added. After you restock, it can take about 10 minutes before shoppers who already saw it out of stock get it.
  • The gift is an ordinary product on your Online Store, so shoppers can also find it in search and buy it at its normal price.

What this app does not do

  • Gifts for buying a particular product or collection, buy X get Y, buy one get one, bundles, or free shipping. The minimum counts the whole cart, minus the products you exclude.
  • Let shoppers choose their gift or its size: each gift is the one product variant you pick.
  • Give a product that is sold only with a subscription. The gift editor does not accept one.
  • Limit a gift to one order per customer: every order that reaches the minimum gets it.
  • Add a gift when a shopper enters a discount code.
  • Translate the gift's name in the progress message (the product name as it is in your admin) or your own progress message text.
  • Change orders after they are placed. If a shopper returns items and the rest of the order no longer reaches the minimum, the gift stays with the order; handle it under your return policy.
