Free download for Shopify stores
One file to plan a free gift with purchase before you switch it on: work out a break even minimum spend, decide the rules, list the test carts, and compare a trial with the same period before. No sign up. Open it in Excel, or import it into Google Sheets.
What is inside
- Start here. A one page guide to the colours and sheets.
- Offer planner. Enter your average order value, gift cost, margin, planned minimum spend and order numbers. It shows the break even minimum spend, the gift as a share of your minimum, the margin left after the gift and the gift cost per month.
- Minimum spend table. The break even minimum for other margins and gift costs, so you can pick a minimum with room to spare.
- Rules to decide. Nine questions to answer before launch, such as whether spend counts before or after discounts and whether sale items count.
- Test carts. Eight sample carts to try before shoppers do, with a place to note what you saw.
- Trial tracker. Compare orders, revenue and average order value for the period before the offer and during it.
How the numbers are worked out
- Break even minimum spend = average order value + (gift cost divided by margin).
- Gift share of the minimum = gift cost divided by the minimum spend.
- Margin left after the gift = minimum spend times margin, minus gift cost.
- Gift cost per month = orders that reach the minimum times gift cost.
The numbers in the file are examples. Replace them with yours. It is a planning aid, not a forecast: it assumes shoppers add items to reach the minimum and that your margin applies to the added items.

Setting up the gift in your store
Giftproof is a Shopify app that adds a free gift to the cart when a shopper reaches your minimum spend, and removes it if they drop below. Giftproof is coming soon.
