Extra sales needed to match your old profit

Where each sale goes, as a share of your normal price

- Discount given
- Profit kept
How the numbers are worked out
A discount lowers the profit on each unit sold, so you need to sell more units to earn what you earned before.
- Price after discount = price times (1 minus the discount).
- Profit per sale = price minus product cost.
- Margin = profit per sale divided by the price.
- Extra sales needed = old profit per sale divided by new profit per sale, minus 1.
This is a starting point, not a forecast. It assumes the cost of each unit stays the same and that you are comparing the same period. It does not include shipping, payment fees or ad spend unless you have already counted them in your product cost. A discount can also bring other benefits, such as clearing stock or winning new customers, which this calculator does not measure. The starting numbers above are only placeholders for you to change.
Tips for choosing a discount
- Smaller discounts need a smaller rise in sales to pay off.
- Compare the extra sales needed with what your store has managed in past promotions.
- Check each product separately, because margins differ between products.
- Review the results after the sale and adjust next time.
